The Nutrition Educator II assists the Nutrition Manager in the development and implementation of new nutrition and education programs. Serves on Clinic wide committees in one’s area of expertise. Participates as a full clinic partner and in the pump and CGM programs. Collaborates with other educators in identifying needs, developing and providing clinical programs and services.
Other responsibilities include providing state of the art DSMT and nutrition education, in a variety of settings, to patients and their families/care-partners, helping to optimize their diabetes management. Participates in the development of education curricula and materials by writing original material and/or reviewing the work of others. Promotes and disseminates quality diabetes and nutrition information to professionals and the public following established Clinic Division guidelines. Serves as a leader mentoring less experienced staff, dietetic interns and nutrition professionals in the advanced practice program. Provides coverage for the nutrition services manager in her absence.
This role is 32 hours per week (Four 8 hour days) and is benefits eligible. Hours are flexible 8:00-4:30; 8:30-5:00; or 9:00-5:30pm
Responsibilities:Program Development and ImplementationWork directly with the Nutrition Service Manager to develop, market and implement clinical/education programs that service patients unmet needs. This includes determining market and patient expectations/needs and developing programs collaboratively with other Center staffAttend appropriate Joslin Boston committee meetings to remain involved and active member of clinical and educational staff. Participates in quality control/quality improvement activities within one’s scope of practice that promotes quality service. Participates in the development and revision of educational materials and curricula.Work in collaboration with staff in Boston to further develop, implement and oversee the professional nutrition program and the dietetic intern diabetes rotations to help optimize their formal training in all areas of diabetes management.DSMTEvaluate and assess patient’s management and training needs, self care behaviors, obstacles to successful implementation of therapy in a variety of settings.Develop individualized education and management plans to include appropriate follow-up. Provide formal training on diabetes management and risk factor reduction. Provide management consultation in person and over the phone to patients/care - providers according to Joslin policy and procedures.Coordinate consultations and referrals and facilitate communication between patient and providers as needed. Measure and documents through written tests and/or verbal demonstration, patients understanding of information taught.
Nutrition Provide state of the art nutrition/teaching education. Applies accepted standards of care and education adopted by Joslin Clinic as indicated in Joslin Policy and Procedures to patients and their families/care-partners to help optimize diabetes management. Maintains appropriate and accurate documentation in all areas, meeting standards and providing needed information for clinic and department evaluation and actions.Documents and processes medical records, billing and statistical records according to Joslin Policy and Procedures. Maintain professional growth and developmentMaintains professional registration and certification. Stays up to date on current thought and research in diabetes, diabetes management and behavior change strategies ensuring that Joslin Education Services as well as one’s professional services are consistent with the provision of state-of-the-art care.Attend relevant conferences as staffing and budget allow. Contributes to Center goals for outreach and increased visibility by maintaining active involvement in professional organizations (such as contributing to newsletters and articles, delivering lectures, and contributing to development and implementation of work shops.)

As a member of an interdisciplinary team in the Healthcare Services department of Joslin Diabetes Center, the Nurse in this position will be involved in the development and oversight of new products and services that extend the Joslin mission to a wide variety of audiences including primary care providers and individuals with diabetes. The individual will collaborate closely with both the various client groups (which may include pharma, payors, and industry) as well as with the clinicians and program staff of Joslin Diabetes Center. The position requires excellence in the following skills: · Managing client relations · writing for professional and patient audiences · awareness of current diabetes trends and research, particularly in education · Public speaking.
Some travel is required.
Patient care in Joslin Clinic will also be an element of the job, with the individual seeing patients, teaching classes and/or handling other responsibilities for up to 20% of the time.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Diabetes Educator (CDE preferred), Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
EXPERIENCE: Three years experience in direct diabetes care with emphasis on patient education. Skills in project management, client relations and leadership are desired. Excellent organizational, problem-solving, presentation and writing skills, with ability to work both independently and collaboratively on multiple tasks.
